How to convert Stamp 2 to Stamp 4 based on Irish citizen child?

Post by overblood » Mon Feb 17, 2025 3:35 pm

I had a child with my Brazilian partner 6 weeks ago in Cork city.

I am Irish.

She is here on a stamp 2 student visa. We are not married.

Baby already has her PPS and passport.

How exactly does my partner convert her stamp 2 to stamp 4?

There is conflicting information on the official immigration websites.

This site says you need to visit the Burgh Quay office or your "local immigration office" to change your permission.

See the stamp 1 table: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/registe ... ermission/

This site says you need to apply online, but from the wording it only looks like she can renew her stamp 2 permission online?

See "resident in the state on an existing permission"

https://www.irishimmigration.ie/my-situ ... zen-child/

It's confusing. What do we do?

Can this be done online, or do we need to drag the baby up to Dublin city? Can we do it anywhere near cork city?

Thank you

They do not automatically let people convert from their current permission to Stamp 4 just because they had an Irish child. Stamp 4 has to be applied for, and in this case would be applied for under being a parent of an Irish citizen. All documents required to apply are included in the link you have about The Parent of an Irish Citizen Child. If your partner is approved, they will then get an approval letter and they then have to go to your local Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) office, which is probably your local Garda station since you are in Cork.

@overblood

Your partner has to make an account online and apply for renewal as Parent of an Irish Citizen Child.

Why does she need to apply for a "renewal"? She doesn't want to renew her stamp 2 visa. She wants a stamp 4 visa. Can this be done online?

It's not very clear from the official immigration website.

**Resident in the State on an existing permission**

When she already has permission in the state, she just needs to renew it online with her new documents to be granted the permission her documents are submited for. There is nothing called changing permission. Her permission will just be upgraded.

If someone is currently residing in the state they can renew online and provide relevant documents for the stamp 4.
All links ultimately lead to this: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/my-situ ... child/#How

But there is a section in the online form where you select your stamp for renew9. Does she select stamp 2 or stamp 4? There's a huge warning saying DO NOT SELECT THE WRONG STAMP or there will be a delay. The word renewal is confusing us.

Does the form give you an option to convert or change stamps?. There is only renewal and what stamp you are renewing/renewing to, depending on the type of documents you have.

If you have doubts here you are free to apply for it the way you wish.
