URGENT: Place of Birth spelling error in Naturalization certificate

Post by am1210 » Thu Mar 06, 2025 11:58 pm

Hi,

I received my naturalization certificate in December, but there was a spelling error in Place Of Birth, which was caused by a mistake from the Home Office. I applied for a spelling correction by post on January 3rd,and I got the certificate back today, after 2 months.

I got the certificate but they did not correct the spelling. They sent a covering letter with following

"Dear Mrs --

I am writing with regard to your request for a correction to be made to your certificate of naturalisation as a British citizen.

I regret that we will not be able to amend your certificate because following an internet search, the spelling on your certificate is the up to date accepted spelling and as such can not be amended.

Please find enclosed your unamended certificate of naturalisation.

Yours sincerely,"

I need to travel to India by April 10th, but the Home Office informed me that I cannot travel until I receive the British passport.
If I submit another application for a correction, I am concerned it won’t be processed in time, which will prevent me from traveling.

Can I apply for a British passport if my place of birth has a minor spelling mistake (one letter difference: "A" instead of "U")?
Would it be advisable to include a covering letter along with the Home Office letter explaining the error, or is it best to avoid mentioning it?
Is there any way for me to travel to India using my Indian passport after obtaining British naturalization? If so, can I return to the UK with an e-visa?
I have already returned my BRP card
I appreciate your help.

The simple answer is, if you exit the UK without a British Passport, you're not coming back until you get one.

Not sure how things would play out with the Indian authorities if you wanted to get a COE on your Indian passport.
No sin in failing, you just have to try and try again!

The only way to know is to apply for a UK passport and see what they say. Consistency is expected for legal names, don't know if this extends to place of birth on foreign passports.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

TBH, I think you can just apply for a passport. HMPO will just list the town of birth recorded on your naturalization certificate.

I guess the difference is just a different spelling of the same place
