Caregiver from abroad?

Post by aman90 » Fri May 30, 2025 1:34 pm

How does one bring over a ill elderly persons companion(not partner or relative) to travel with the person and stay in the UK? The elderly person is at this age culturally, emotionally and physically dependant on this person. Leaving the patient abroad is not an option.
I'm aware of all the reasons of why it may be difficult.
Keen on knowing if there is a pathway or if anyone has been successful and how?

There isn't a pathway for what you describe.

The companion woul have to find a visa they qualify for in their own right.

You could look at the Overseas Domestic Worker visa, but that may not be what you have in mind.

That visa
(a) is equivalent to a visit visa and limited to six months and can not be extended within the UK,
(b) entitled the holder to the same employment rights (leave, sick leave, minimum wage, etc) as a British worker,
(c) requires a written job contract that is dated to at least a year before the date of the visa application,
(d) requires the applicant to have a B1 level of English.

It also imposes requirements on the employer.
Your employer must be either a:

British citizen who usually lives outside the UK and who does not intend to remain in the UK for more than 6 months
foreign citizen who is coming to the UK on a visit and who does not intend to remain for more than 6 months
As CR001 has mentioned above, I don't think there is a visa for the specific circumstance mentioned above. The family of the old person would want to look at an appropriate care home or hiring a care worker who is already entitled in their own right to work in the UK.

These two options are mutually incompatible and the employer will have to take a call as to which one of the two options they want to choose.
