Citizenship application questions - please help

Post by indian89 » Sun Jun 01, 2025 1:57 pm

Applying for UK citizensip via ILR being partner of UK citizen.

Do I have to give my physical passport away? Am I allowed to travel during the application assessment?

Can the 2 referees be two friends?

How many letters should I provide?

Do I need to do scans of my husband passport?

Only scans of documents are required. No originals required and travel is ok.
Can the 2 referees be two friends?
Yes
How many letters should I provide?
You don’t provide letters. Referees fill in a form each.
Do I need to do scans of my husband passport?
Yes, the personal details page.

If your passport is stamped, that is all you need to prove residence. No other letters required.

What happens to your foreign passport is not relevant to ask in this sub forum. Ask these questions in the Other Countries sub forum please.

https://www.immigrationboards.com/viewforum.php?f=29

Also, you are only British once you attend the ceremony, not when you get the approval letter/email.

All the stamps for your entries into the UK and any stamps that show you traveling outside the UK.

Correct. You can only apply for a British passport after the citizenship ceremony. So you can apply later that day or any day after the day of the citizenship ceremony.

I believe (but I am not sure) that you will have to send all your uncancelled passports (both expired and current) to HMPO at the time of the application for the first British passport. But wait for others to advise on this point.

You have to send your original foreign passport with your British passport application.

It will be sent back you.

UK Passport is not compulsory, you can apply anytime once you are British.
Note it's not an immigration application and will take up to around 3 weeks, per HMPO website, often faster.

You lose your Indian citizenship when you become British.

Do not delay applying for a British passport.

Thanks for this.
Sorry where on that website does it say 3 weeks for fresh passports?

In terms of the ceremony I can wait 2 months after home office communication before attending right? It is after this period I need to provide passport?

In view of recent labour govt plans for immigration, has there been any changes proposed to citizenship timelines for those married to UK citizen?

There are no changes to citizenship laws. Citizenship is not an immigration application.

You have 90 days to attend the ceremony after approval. You can apply for a British passport after your ceremony.

Didn't labour propose extending citizenship and ILR?

The government issued a "White Paper", a basis for discussion and evaluation, and eventually for changing some regulation. No laws or regulations are currently before parliament or at implementation stage. Applications submitted now will be under current rules .

Not to my knowledge. Even if there was, it is not law yet. So just use the current guidelines.
