Naturalisation

Post by Thinkandgo » Sun Jan 25, 2026 4:21 am

Hi,

I am a British Citizen by Naturalisation.

5 years ago my wife and 2 children joined me as dependants and now have been granted ILR (Set M).

Now my children are 23 years and 19 years old.

Can my family immediately apply for Naturalisation or do they need to wait for 1 year?

Thanks in advance.

Your spouse can apply now if she meets the 3 uear requirments.

Your adult children have to wait the full 12 months on ILR before rhey can apply for British citizenship.

Spouse of a British Citizen only needs to provide details/documents for the 3 years back from the AN application date.
Refer to the AN guidance please: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... n-guidance

The dependent status of your now-adult children ended with ILR.

They now need to meet the same requirements as you (the same one year wait after ILR, absences and physical presence requirements, LITUK and English language tests, etc) as you.

And yes, they will need to get an English language test done, even if they have done their schooling in the UK, unless they have completed a degree level course in the UK (so your 23 year old child may use that if they have completed their degree).
