Unmarried partner visa in 2013

Post by bluesky7 » Fri Mar 20, 2026 10:46 am

I received ilr in 2018 from 5 years unmarried partner route (opposit sex British partner).

Surpringly, I've only just noticed that my first unmarried partner visa (applied outside of UK in 2013) may have an error on it.

On my sticker visa In the type section it says "TO JOIN PARTNER xxx".

I did some googling and it looks like around 2013 people with a spouse and unmarried partner all received the same wording on their Entry clearance sticker "SPOUSE/CP".

There were some big immigration changes in July 2012 (not sure the exact name maybe Part 8 --> Appendix FM). Maybe the wording for visa changed around that time and I suspect what I received was either old version of wording or the wrong type of visa.

Long story, but I was already living in the UK for many years but had to leave before my visa expired, then apply for Unmarried partner visa from outside of UK.

I received 33 month which was correct period for spouse/CP/unmarried partner under the new rule (under the old rule: 27month). Also as far as I know not many visa categories were given 33 month and my partner's name is on my visa so I don't think I received a visa in a completely irrelevant category.

Since receiving the first unmarried partner visa, I applied flr(m) and then set(m). All very smooth and approved really quickly.

I still have the copy of my application forms. So I can see I applied correctly.

I can't find any information regarding entry clearance wordings around 2013 but I found 2022 archive file (List of Endorsements for Entry Clearance). It says for unmarried partner under Appendix FM endorsed "Settlement: To Join/Acc Partner" and Under Part 8, "TO JOIN PARTNER".

But I found on internet that many people received "SPOUSE/CP" for unmarried partner visa around 2013. One of them officially reported as an error but it was confimed "SPOUSE/CP" was correct. I can't find any one had same wording of mine except people around 2006.

1. Can anyone please confirm what should be written in the type section for opposite sex unmarried partner entry clearance visa in 2013 (after rule changed in July 2012)?

2. If I received wrong wording or wrong visa, can this affect my future naturalisation application? Or can my current ilr be revoked?

3. Do I need to do any action now or just leave it? Or when I apply naturalisation should I mention this?

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Nothing you need to do and nothing incorrect in your initial visa endorsement, you applied to join a partner, as it says.

If there had been any issue, nothing you could do now 13 years later anyway to change it.

CP is for civil partner who has a registered civil partner, similar to a marriage.

Thank you so much for you reply. Sorry to ask again but I am not sure I understood correctly.

Do you think it is okay even if I did receive the old version of the endorsement (To JOIN PARTNER)" as I applied for a visa "To join my partner" and that is literally what it is saying on my entry clearance?

Also, just in case I did receive the wrong/old endorsement do you think it won't cause any problems when I apply naturalisation?

You are overthinking completely.

The endorsement would have been correct.

This has no relevance to British citizenship either.
