British Citizen Dependent - Citizenship application Form

Post by lat » Wed Jul 01, 2026 11:43 am

Dear Team,

My husband has recently become a British citizen and has received his British passport.

My two children (both under 18) and I already have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) through Long residence, and we will be eligible to apply for British citizenship in September.

Now that my husband is a British citizen, are we eligible to apply for British citizenship now, or do we still need to wait until September?

If we can apply now, could someone please let me know which application form we need to complete for the children and me?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

You can all apply now, provided you meet all the requirements based on 3 years residence.

Form AN, same as your husband used, then you add the children to your form as they get processed under form MN1.

Note there is no concept of dependent for any citizenship applications.

Thank you for your swift response.

I have another question regarding referees for children under 18. Can I use the same referee for my children as I used for my own application, who is a friend of mine?

I noticed that the guidance for a child states that one referee must be a professional who has worked with the child, such as a teacher or doctor. Could you please confirm whether a family friend can still be used as one of the referees, or whether both referees need to meet specific requirements for children?

One of the referees for a child should be "a professional involved with the child".
Many applicants experience reluctance from such professional to share their details.
UKVI are aware of this issue and will accept a referee acting for an adult applicant.
If you have any details of refusals to act as referees include those with a note explaining.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
