Re-entering UK with naturalisation certificate

Post by newperson » Fri Jul 09, 2010 6:24 am

I will be having my citizenship ceremony next Wednesday. I've just found out that I now need to go to Germany on Thursday and Friday.

My home country allows dual citizenship, so my current passport will still be valid. I am signed up for IRIS, but I imagine that I'm not allowed to use the system again until I get my British passport since the conditions of my leave to remain (ILR) will no longer be relevant nor valid.

So...I'm intending to just take my passport (the one with ILR in it) and my naturalisation certificate with me on my short trip. I reckon that my questions are:

1) Do I need to fill out a landing card? I would imagine that I'm no longer subject to the Immigration Act 1971, even though I don't have a EU passport yet.

2) Which queue do I need to join upon return? UK/EU or non-EU?

I've read the thread started by Dawie on this issue, but those two above questions weren't resolved. In the end, he used his ILR in his South African passport although the ILR was no longer valid, although apparently he wasn't caught out. I'd like to stay on the right side of the law and procedure if at all possible!

Thanks.

Stop looking for legal complications which hardly matter. Just use the IRIS system. When I renewed my passport I asked whether I needed to re-register on IRIS, they said no, and the gate still opened for me when I came back in.

Thanks.
i just don't understand what the problem is. even if you have to fill out a landing card, then it doesn't matter, either way you'll be let in. and i suggest you leave your certificate at home - just in case you lose it - and because it's of A4 format, and so difficult to carry. it doesn't say anywhere on the certificate that you're supposed to present it to the immigration authorities at the border, although such information is on my eea permanent residence card. i can still use my eea passport to enter the uk, so i presume your ilr (as the name suggests it's without the time limit) will be ok to use, too. obviously, you've not had enough time to get a new passport, and this is not your fault!
