Irish Naturalization status for Northern Ireland

Post by adl » Sat Aug 27, 2011 3:52 pm

Hi everyone,

I have been living in Northern Ireland for last five years and I have been living here on Post Study Work ( PSW) and Tier1 General Migrant Status. As we know that VISA or Immigration Status belongs to British Immigration Law.

My question is,

Can I apply for Irish Naturalization status???

Please advise me or let me know other routs if possible to get Irish Nationality.

Thanks
adl

Hi there, Kindly advise me on this issue, when citizenship application is approved but the Department of Justice sends another letter regarding alleged suspected criminal STRUCK OUT cases, how do you comment on these please? Need urgent answers. Thanks

It is a good question, since children born in Northern Ireland are usually Irish citizens too.

You are right directive but its only children born to brits/irish parents and 5 years legally resident parents (not student/asylum) something to do with the good friday agreement.

As Patty said, these rules that you are referring to evolve from the Good Friday Agreement. It was never the intention to expand these to people other than the traditional citizens of the North of Ireland.

The Citizenship laws only extend to the 26 counties. A person (other than the child born in the island of Ireland) has to live in the 26 counties in order to apply for citizenship.

Good Friday Agreement
I agree that the recent Good Friday Agreement changed some of the rules and reduced the set of people eligible for citizenship from everyone born in NI to only a majority of the people born in NI.

But it does not detract from my point. Naturalization could also be opened up to people living in NI for the same reason that Irish citizenship is opened up to most of the babies born in NI.
