Canadian and visiting UK fiance, is he exempt from a visa?

Post by Valentina » Thu Sep 21, 2006 5:12 pm

Hi there, Im having trouble figuring a few things out..

Im Canadian and my fiance is visiting from Northern Ireland (UK) were trying to figure out a fun way of eloping.. asap, and have been offered a trip to vegas. but next week.
Ive been looking to see if he is exempt from getting a tourist visa to the US but am not sure of all the lingo if he is or not. if he does need a visa then I guess there is not enough time, and we will have to figure out something else to do.

any thoughts or answers on wether he will be able to travel without the visa would be greatly appreciated.

No he won't need a visa. As long as the stay is not for more than 90 days and his passport is valid for more than 90 days from the date of arrival, he'll be fine.

Have a fun trip!

.

The UK (& therefore Northern Ireland) fall under the U.S. visa waiver program.

So, given both of you comply with all conditions of that program, you SHOULD not have trouble.

You should be aware that a lot of changes are in the works, such as this one :

US passport rules for 2007 delayed by one week
http://www.workpermit.com/news/2006_09_ ... update.htm

And this development :

US visa waiver program for 27 countries flawed, under review
http://www.workpermit.com/news/2006_09_ ... flawed.htm

To the best of my knowledge (and I am not 100% on top of breaking news this month), Canada and the UK are not threatened by changes to the visa waiver program, although new requirements may be popping up soon.

Coming up soon (2008) any border crossing into/out of the U.S. will require a valid passport .. but, never telling when border check will take their own initiative these days.

Also, as of 08 January 2007, if you enter/depart by plane or boat you will be required to have valid passports.

So. Make sure all is in order.

Given that, your legal entry in & out of the U.S. for both of you should not be any issue.

Only for British citizens. Not for other categories of British national.

Canada is not part of the Visa Waiver program. Canadians (and Bermudians) are admitted to the U.S. under separate provisions.

British citizens have always needed a valid passport. The exemption from the passport requirement only applied to Canadians, Americans and Bermudians.
