5 Year as apposed to 6 month visa

Post by chunkybeefsoup » Sat Jan 14, 2012 7:53 am

Hi

My wife has acquired British Citizen and surrendered her Indian passport.

I am British.

We have applied for a 5 year Indian visa for both my wife and son who have neither travelled on their respective British passports.

I was told they would unlikely get a 5 year visa but may get a 6 month visa instead.

can anyone comment on this. Also would I get a refund of money if they both only get 6 month visas?

Thanks

Depends which Visa did they apply for. As from the website it mentions 6 months to 1 yesr for the tourist Visa.
So it is unlikely to get a 5 year Tourist Visa.

Why did your wife not apply for OCI upon surrendering her Indian Passport ? She could have then enjoyed a life long visa to India. She can even do this now. You and your son would then become eligible for PIO, which would allow you and him to get a 15 yr visa.

You will now probably get a 6 month visa, rather than a 5 yr visa.

As I understand it for OCI they put a sticker in your British passport as well as issuing a separate OCI passbook.

So when your British passports expires do you the have to through the whole process again to get a sticker in it?

Yes.

You do not have to. If you don't then, whenever you travel to India you will have to carry your old expired UK passport (with the life long visa stamp), the new valid UK passport and OCI booklet. Also they have now simplified the process to transfer visa to your new UK passport and made it much cheaper (£18 as of now) if you do wish to do so.

Thank you everyone for responding to my question.

My father and mother were of indian origin - would that entitle me to the oci card?

Would my son also be able to apply for the oci his mother a naturalised British citizen but had previously an Indian passport and me being born and bred in UK?

Your son could apply for OCI on the basis of his mother.

You would have to produce your parents Indian Passport(s) or some documentary proof that they were Indian citizens to be eligible for an OCI.

For more info, read the OCI FAQ

Thanks.

My son managed to get a 5-year visa.

However his passport expires in 4 years.

Is it possible for him to carry his old British passport with to 5 year visa when the time comes or does he need to get it transfered onto new passport?

Thanks

Yes. Old Passport with 5 yr visa + New valid passport whenever he travels to India.

No they don't have any problems with it (as long as you have both passports ) and neither do border officials.
