I feel I am exactly in the same boat, like you with your FCE. I passed my Certificate in Advanced English nearly 20 years ago. However I doubt I will manage to find any of the required documents that supposedly came along with it like Statement of results, Candidate ID number and Candidate's secret number. I cannot even find the certificate itself! On top of that, I don't think I have even been given any secret number! This must be something new as this is required to check the details of a certificate on-line whereas in early '90s Internet was in its infancy!

I have done some research myself and it appears that PET could be the way to go and also one of the cheapest option here. West London Collage charges £70 for the 'privilege' ;). Which means I will have to spend my money on some document which is well below my qualifications just to satisfy UK Border Agency. I hear some of you say I could go for a higher certificate but this wouldn't mean anything else but spending even more money on a document which I still do not really need .. arghhhh

I take your FCE has been issued before April 2013 and if this is the case you will need to provide:
Your Certificate along with Statement of results, Candidate ID number and Candidate's secret number (you should also provide Statement of Entry if possible)

Provided you have kept all those document you will be fine. However if you need to take an exam I would suggest PET as this one doesn't require attending any lessons as far as I am aware, ... but correct me if I'm wrong.

 So far I haven't found any other cheaper option but if someone comes across anything cheaper than this please do let me know.
