Applying for citizenship - more than 450 days outside UK

Post by julianavelez » Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:20 pm

Hello, I’d like to apply for British Citizenship in May 2013. I came to the UK in May 2008 and I have indefinite leave to remain. During the 5 years period I have been away of the country for more than 450 days. 463 days to be exact. They say on the UK border Agency webpage that normally they disregard this if you meet all the requirements which I do. I would like to know if someone has gotten the passport under these circumstances. I have been away of the country on pleasure trips. Thanks for your help.

You will be fine. Discretion is normally applied up to 480 days. When counting the days, did you ignore the day of departure/arrival? Only full days (24 hours) outside the UK should be counted.

Thanks for your response. Yes I did ignore the day of departure/arrival.

Hi Julianavelez,

Did you get the passport approval though you has 463 days absence in last 5 years?

Thanks,

Ali

Note Citizenship is different from 'getting a passport'.
It is the citizenship application that has specific requirements about absences.
There is no such requirement when applying for a British passport after a successful naturalisation.

Discretion is discretionary.
Even if someone was granted discretion on their case does not mean anyone else will be now.
All that is gold does not glitter; Not all those who wander are lost. E&OE.
