ILR - Qualify for state pension?

Post by Magichat » Mon Aug 17, 2015 3:20 pm

Hi

My girlfriend (a US citizen) received her ILR visa last year, having been in the UK for over 5 years on a combination of a student visa and then an Unmarried Partner visa.

She works full-time and pays national insurance contributions, and intends to remain in the UK for the foreseeable future. Assuming she continues to work and pay the requisite NI contribs over the requisite number of years, will she qualify for a basic state pension upon retirement age?

Many thanks and apologies if this is already covered elsewhere.

Yes, she will qualify for an amount based on what she has paid into the system. She can make extra NI contributions to make up for any years towards the full state pension.

One further question, she worked full-time for two years and contributed NI whilst under the visa prior to the ILR, namely an Unmarried Partner visa. This visa did not carry a 'no public funds' qualification.

Does this mean that this two years under the Unmarried Partner visa would also count towards her calculation for qualifying for UK state pension?

AIUI they all count but the UK state pension will be worthless by then so why worry?!
