When you say you have been 'together for just under a year', have you actually met?

Well he can of course apply for a visitor visa, but in order for the application to be successful he will have to submit evidence of strong ties to his home country in order to convince the Entry Clearance Officer that he will return without overstaying. Is he employed or studying? Does he own property in Jamaica or have family members dependent on him?
Why don't you visit him in Jamaica first?

His greatest challenge is to convince the ECO that he will do 'everything properly' and not overstay. Is he permanently employed in Jamaica? Can he submit evidence that his son is dependent on him?
How long does he intend to visit for?

... but that won't cut much ice with the tin men of UKVI (visitor visa division).

Inability to take leave will not meet with much sympathy from hard-hearted caseworkers who apply rules for visit visas dispassionately.

Applicants' convenience is not a consideration.
