EEA4 PR to citizenship questions

Post by prince.xavier » Thu Sep 01, 2016 11:04 am

Hi,
I am holding a PR (via EEA4 route) for more than a year now and my spouse (EU national) has been exercising treaty rights in the UK for the last 6+ years. I am now considering to apply for British citizenship. Could someone clarify a few points please?:

1) Do I have to pay the same amount to get the citizenship as a normal citizenship applicant? (the reason for this question is because I paid almost nothing for the PR and am wondering if this is also the case for citizenship)

2) How long does it normally take? I can not afford to leave my passport for 6 months as I travel frequently.

3) My spouse is considering to obtain British citizenship in addition to the EU. So which application (mine or my spouse's) should be done first? Or can we apply together? What are the charges?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

1. The fee for naturalisation is the same for everyone. No special price for EU citizens and their family members.

2. Apply using NCS at the council. You then get to keep your original documents. There is a small charge for this service. Applications for citizenship can take anywhere between a couple of months to many months.

3. If EU spouse has a document certifying PR and meets the requirements for citizenship, spouse can apply. You can apply together, separate forms, or individually. There is no discount for joint applications anymore and each person applying must meet the requirements individually, I. E there is no "dependent" type system for naturalisation. Each person applying has to pay the standard fee which is £1236 currently.
