Application for first adult British passport

Post by mriduljain » Wed Mar 01, 2017 6:10 pm

Hi everyone!
I am an Indian citizen holding a valid Indian passport since my birth in India in 1989.
However, I am also a British citizen by birth having been born to a British father.
Now, I have decided to exercise my right as a British citizen and apply for my first adult British Passport. Since I reside in India, is it better for me to apply from outside the UK or should I get a standard visitor visa and make an application from inside the UK.(I have some distant family members in the UK with whom I can stay). The standard time for getting a passport is 6 weeks from inside UK and 16 weeks from outside UK. However, my immigration adviser told me yesterday that passport applications from outside the UK are taking much longer than expected nowadays and have a higher chance of rejection. Is this true?
On the other hand, I read a post on another immigration forum which said that the Home office might reject my application made from inside the UK on the grounds that if I am already a British citizen then I should not be entering the country on a visitor visa. I already have 2 visitor visas from my earlier trips to the UK stamped in my current Indian passport. Does this hamper my chance of getting a British passport?
Any advice regarding the above issue would be highly appreciated.
TIA

Answer to your questions as below:
1. My father was born in the UK in the year 1964. He was married to my mother at the time of my birth. (I am aware that I need to show their marriage certificate in this case).
2. Is it okay if I apply for a standard visitor visa and then make an application for Passport from within the UK?
3. Any idea of additional docs that I might be required to furnish to HMPO apart from my birth certificate, my father's birth certificate, my parent's marriage certificate, relevant passports..

Dear CR001
Thanks for your reply.
To answer to your first question, my father was born in the UK on 24/02/1964 but moved back to India on 31/12/1971. He never held a British passport but was entered on my grandfather's passport as a child when they left for India. He now holds an Indian passsport but point to be noted is that he has never renounced his British citizenship officially. He married my mother, who is an Indian citizen, in 1987 and I was born to them in 1989.
Thanks for letting me know that applications from India can take 6 to 12 months.
Do you have any idea of approximately how long it would take me to get a British passport once I make the application from within the UK. I ask this because my case is a lot more complex and also because I shall be arriving on the 6-month standard visitor visa and then making the application for the British passport. Also, does the above-mentioned fact that I shall be arriving in the UK on a visitor visa and then applying for a British passport hamper my chances of getting a British passport in any way?
Thanks in advance for your help
