Hi
I am trying to apply for citizenship this year and I was wondering if anyone could help. I moved here with my family, from South Africa, with my father's work permit in 2005. He was made redundant in 2006 and became too ill to travel back to South Africa (he had heart problems which made it hard for him to fly). He passed away in 2008 in the UK. After his passing, my family applied for indefinite leave to remain about a year later. This was rejected the first time and our visas were curtailed as a consequence. They gave us no date for return or a timeline by which we should leave. We were given grounds to appeal, however on the appeal date, we arrived at the tribunal, and the UK home office representative did not turn up.
We then appealed again and was told to take it to high court. They sent a letter saying the Home office has held onto our passports and told us we should go collect them when we are ready. In this letter the home office did not provide an address or a phone number to call. We repeatedly sent them letters but received no response.
In 2011, the home office sent a letter about the backlog of older applications and granted my family indefinite leave to remain, outside the immigration rules.
It has been 5 years since I have been granted indefinite leave to remain and I would like to apply for citizenship now. Does my previous situation affect my good character requirements? It is not clear on any website nor is it clear on Appendix D. I don't think I have broken any immigration laws however I would like to be sure before I apply.
Thanks
