Good Character and Tax

Post by KTB » Mon Mar 06, 2017 4:45 pm

Hi all

Had ILR since 2011 and married to a British citizen. I'm considering applying for citizenship. When we moved to the UK I was retired. I understand from reading through the forms and guidance that tax checks are done through the application process.

I have never worked, nor paid tax, although I do have a NIN but no tax reference number. My wife is also retired and we live off savings. I'm not yet old enough to get my pension from Australia.

My wife owns the property we live in outright and pays council tax etc.

I'm wondering how the HO would view my application since I have never worked or submitted tax returns. What might I be asked to provide or do?

If anyone has any idea, I'd appreciate some feedback.

Thanks

Employment is not a requirement for citizenship.

Thanks for such a prompt response.

I was thinking more of having no tax record at all here in the UK. Would that raise questions such as how do I support myself and what might the HO want from me in relation to that, if at all.

It should not be an issue as even a housewife can apply if she has never worked.
