Short term study

Post by lisalough15 » Sat Mar 11, 2017 4:37 pm

My husband is Canadian and has been accepted to study at Edinburgh Napier University 04 September - 16 December 2017. I am Scottish and have family and friends in Edinburgh. We would would to be in the UK from mid-July to early-January.

Questions:
- I understand that my husband can apply for a short term study visa on entry to the UK at the border with the University acceptance letter, proof of funds, return ticket and £89; is this correct?
- I also understand that with the short term study visa he can only arrive in the UK up to a week before the course starts; how long after it ends can he remain?
- Given that he can only arrive a week before, we are thinking of coming to the UK mid-July (him entering as a visitor), then go to Cyprus, or another close country, for a week at the end of August and reenter at the start of September on the study visa (obtained at the border). Is this permissible? His total days in the UK would still be less than 180.

I appreciate any advice on this matter or other ideas on how we can be in the UK for the second half of this year.

You cannot apply 'at the border'. It must be applied for before he travels to the UK.

Hello CR001,

Sorry, I'm not familiar with short-term study but I was under the impression non-visa nationals can be granted entry for short-term study (for less than six months) like the OP asked.

Check if you need a UK visa
