Using Miss & Ms after married - Title to match passport

Post by iamwiew » Wed Mar 15, 2017 8:47 am

Hi everyone,

I have a question about using Miss and Ms in UK. In my country, a woman only get to choose Miss or Mrs after get married, we don't have Ms. I got married in my country and decided to keep all my title and names, so nothing changed on my identification and personal documents (including my passport - still Miss XXXX).

Since I came back to UK, I have been told and done some research online that a married woman should either be Ms or Mrs, as Miss only refer to an unmarried woman. I don't mind using Ms but then it won't match with my passport and other personal documents/ national identification (we have "Title" included on the first page of our passport, also national identification). I am just worried that if I changed to Ms (i.e. my bank account), it won't match my title in passport and it might be problem when I renew my visa next time.

So is it acceptable to keep using Miss in UK even I am married (for like driving license, bank account)?

PS. I have recently granted my WORK visa with title "Miss" and marital status "Married" and wasn't questioned by home office (so I just assumed that it's acceptable...?)

Thanks for your advice in advance guys

Yes, fine, should not be an issue.

Thanks for the answer CR001.

As you said it should be ok using "Miss" but in your personal opinion, what would be a better option? change to Ms or keep Miss? I am more convinced to keep using Miss as it at least matches my passport.

Miss is fine. I am married but use Miss or Ms but then again, my passport doesn't state a title.

There is no legal requirement to use Miss, Ms or Mrs.

I was thinking the same. Go bare, without a title. Indeed, dare to be a mononym, like Madonna or Cher.

Alternatively, be bold and go for a gender-neutral Mx.

Sorry to be a pest but I am now considering to change all UK documents to Ms instead of Miss (i.e. bank account, driving license).

So in this scenario, my passport states title "Miss" (nothing I can do as Ms doesn't recognize in my country) but my UK bank account and payslips etc. are "Ms". I understand there's no legal requirement for title but do you think this would cause a problem for visa application in the future? was worried if home office might see this as a conflict on my identity (like passport from my country says one thing but bank account says something else etc.)

Thanks again
