Honeymoon passport issue

Post by Neutrino » Thu Mar 16, 2017 11:37 am

Hi There,

I am a South African born person and have been living in London for the past 15 years on my Italian Passport.

In my excitement booking our honeymoon for April 28th, I didn't realize my Italian passport expires on May 1st. Luckily with the Italian consulate, if you get an appointment, you can get your passport on the same day. But there are no appointments available before May and I am in fear that my honeymoon plans will be ruined as flights and accommodation are booked to Thailand.

I have emailed the consulate and I am awaiting a response.

If all else fails, will I be able to leave and return to the UK on my South African Passport if on my return I can prove that I have been living here legally for the past 15 years? What is likely to happen if I do this?

Is it worth claiming my passport is "lost"?

I am really at a loss so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot enter the UK on a SA passport as you require a visa to enter the UK. Boarding your return flight might be problematic too if you use your SA passport.

Do you have an Italian ID card??

Ok thanks, that rules that out.

No I do not have an Italian ID.

I do have a UK drivers licence though if that helps.

No drivers licence does not help. For entry to the UK, you could have used your Italian national ID card.

Do you have a Document certifying permanent residence?

I have a certified copy of my
CERTIFICATE OF CITIZENSHIP A.I.R.E. [Registry of Italian Residents Abroad]
from the municipality in Italy where my birth was registered and on it, it states
where I was born and where I regularly reside (although it has my old uk address not my current one)

I think I will just go the consulate and try my luck without an appointment.
