British Citizenship for immigrant grandmother

Post by Hannalie » Sat Mar 25, 2017 9:51 am

Hello all!
I am South-African born (1952) when South Africa was a British overseas territory and came to the UK in 1997 with my Son (born 1985) and my daughter (born 1981) and my third child remained in South Africa because he was 18 and preferred to remain with his father in South-Africa. After four years in the UK my son (born 1985) and I were granted permenant residency. Six months short of this, but after completing college here, my daughter left the UK and returned to South Africa.
Although she does not have a British passport, she has a record if being in the UK and completed her education here.

Now to the crux of the matter. My daughter has had a baby and I am asking you people who are far more knowledgeable than I whether there is a possibility that the child could be granted British Citizenship, either through my daughter ,(unlikely, I would imagine) or through me as a NATURALISED grandmother. Please could anybody help me in answering my request? Thank you so much!

If your daughter was born in the UK, then she is British otherwise than by descent. Then her child is automatically British.

As your daughter was born in South Africa and returned there before naturalising as British, she has not status in the UK and neither will her daughter. There is no way you can sponsor them, they will have to qualify for a visa in their own right.
