Urgent - replacement BRP help!!

Post by tingalinga » Mon Apr 03, 2017 5:54 pm

Hello everyone! this is my first post on this forum so I hope that I'm doing this correctly. I guess I'll just jump right into the problem?

I'm here in the UK studying with a tier 4 visa, have been since september. a little while ago I lost my BRP card and then went with the wrong form to apply for a new one, and got fined £250 for not submitting the right one in time (which of course sucked). I finally got the fine paid on friday though, and now have to submit my BRP replacement form. I'm kind of completely freaking out though because I was planning on flying home to canada this friday for a month before exams.

I called the home office and asked if there was a possibility that they could send my replacement BRP to my address in Canada instead of here but they said no, but said that one option I have is to nominate someone else to pick up my BRP in the UK, and have them mail it to me in Canada.

If i post in my form tomorrow (april 4th, luckily don't need to send my passport), fly out on the 7th of april and intend to fly back in on the 8th of may, do you think that the BRP would get to my contact here in time? It should be quick then to ship to canada. There's a premium option I'm aware of, but unfortunately can't afford to spend £500 on it at this point. I know it's risky, but i'm really, really homesick as it's my first year away from home and really need to be back with my family for a bit, just have no clue how long these things take..

Thank you so much for reading and for your help!

When did you lose and when did you apply with the 'wrong form'? You don't get fined for using the wrong form, so your assessment of the 'fine' is incorrect.

A BRP can take a couple of months to be processed. It likely won't be done in a month.

Oh, sorry, that part wasn't that important so I didnt really explain fully, just rushed through it! Basically the person on the phone told me to submit an online form notifying me of a lost/stolen BRP card and gave no mention of the actual BRP replacement form I had to post in. The home office then mailed some letters to me telling me what to do but for some reason sent them to the university instead of my actual address, and the university never notified me, so eventually it passed the time limit as to when you had to send the replacement BRP form in for and I got a civil penalty and was fined £250 for it, even though it wasn't really my fault..

And oh no :( That's definitely not what I was hoping for. Do you have any suggestions for what I could do?

It's hard to say whether this is your fault or not. I think it probably is. It appears that you had not updated your address with the Home Office since your original entry clearance application, hence the Home Office wrote to you c/o your university. You must notify the Home Office of your change of address:

https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information-- ... 99&rl_id=3

That being said, if your university advised that you used their address on the entry clearance application, they should therefore be able to handle any mail that is sent to that address. You might want to speak to the Students Union about making a complaint about that.

Ask the international student adviser at your university for advice on your options and whether they can help with any liaison with the Home Office over the replacement BRP.

If you apply for a replacement BRP and it doesn't get to you in time for your return trip, you will need to withdraw the application, apply for single-use BRP to get back to the UK, then apply again for the replacement.

Or postpone your travel.
