Fast track 1st child passport (Parents holding ILR)

Post by plabo » Mon May 29, 2017 3:54 pm

Hello

We parents hold ILR and are expecting a child in 2 weeks time. We have decided to apply for a fast track 1 week service to get the passport. I have a few queries if someone can help please:

Please confirm if the following documents are okay:

1. Full birth certificate of child
2. Both parents BRP showing ILR
3. Passport application form
4. (2) photos with one attested on back
5. Marriage certificate of parents (is it needed)?
6. Anything else?

When I will take all the original documents to the Passport office, will they keep them and post back later with the passport OR will they take a photocopy and return back the original documents?

Thank you

After going through the internet and passport application supporting document, I understand the following:

Once child is born and I get birth certificate, I will get an appointment to submit the application at one of the 7 passport offices across the UK

I will need to take 2 photos (one attested), passport application form, full birth certificate of child, both parents current passport and BRP showing ILR.

Is anything else needed?

I will be paying £3 extra to let the passport office send original documents back by secure delivery.

Am I missing out on anything?

Is parents marriage certificate needed?

I don't think that they need a marriage certificate, if child is claiming British citizenship via mother's ILR.

However, check the guidance notes.

Thanks Vinny. I will then take the documents as mentioned above.

Hi

We parents are married and is it possible that I can submit my wife's passport and ILR BRP instead of mine (father) when submitting for the child's passport as 1 week process? I might have to travel and would want to keep my passport and BRP at home. Will that be okay? We both were granted ILR together and the child has been born after we got ILR? To add, we are married. Is it okay to submit mother's documents instead of father's?

Either is fine.

Please help me with one more query.

If the father is submitting his PP/ILR BRP, is the marriage certificate also needed?

Kind regards.

Yes. Either a marriage certificate or a DNA test proving that he is the natural father of the child is required.

Dear CR001, yes child was born AFTER 2006 and as per your advice, submitting marriage certificate is not needed. But another senior guru (secret.simon) is stating that I do need to.

Can you please clarify.

If the child is born to unmarried parents after 10th September 2015, a DNA test is required to prove that the male parent is the "natural father" of the child. Merely a birth certificate is not sufficient. That of course only applies if the child is claiming British citizenship through the father.

So, if claiming through the father, either a marriage certificate (to prove that the couple are married) or a DNA test (to prove that the male parent is the "natural father" of the child born to unmarried parents) is required.

There is no need of either the marriage certificate or DNA tests if the child claims through the mother. Mater semper certa est.

I think this is over-stating things.

The Secretary of State has the discretion to request a DNA test but it is not a legal requirement. The article quoted doesn't suggest that either. There is no reference to such a requirement in either the Passport Office guidelines or the Nationality Instructions. I'm open to correction- but if it has in fact been a mandate for DNA testing since nearly two years ago, I think we might have heard about it more widely than a single article.
