Non EEA work rights for EU citizen

Post by DeonVenter » Fri Jul 07, 2017 5:07 pm

I have read and reread so many different sites that I am now properly confused about how this works. Scenario: my wife is a Portuguese citizen currently living in South Africa. I am a South African citizen. We want to move to Ireland. Issue is - I would need a job once we get there.
My questions:
How long until I can work once in Ireland ?
What Visa / letter / stamp do I need ?
What is the process I follow to get the right to work ?

Thanks for the help

Patience please, it is a lovely weekend so most people likely out with friends and family.

You can arrive in Ireland without a visa as a South African. You can ask on entry I believe for a stamp as such, but not 100 % sure. You will need to travel with your marriage certificate.

Or arrive and apply for the EU1 residence card. Once your application is submitted, you need to follow the process as they write to you. I believe that you get a a temporary stamp that would allow you to work.

You are probably looking at a couple of months before you can work. Your wife however will have to be exercising treaty rights for you to qualify for any or this, i.e. she cannot be a housewife for example.
