Advice for a new relationship

Post by Redpostbox » Sun Sep 17, 2017 7:45 pm

Hello - I'm right at the beginning of a road that some of you have travelled and I was wondering if I can ask for some advice. I met a Venezuelan man (I am a man also) in Colombia last year on holiday and we have been communicating the last 9 months and I am going to be spending a month with him in Ecuador in December. It is early days but I am optimistic that there could be a long term relationship but I am unsure how I can make the next step.

He is effectively state-less following the economic collapse of his country. I am not exactly sure of his legal position in Ecuador but he has already had to leave Colombia for working on a visitor-only visa waver. There is a high likelihood that he will have to leave Ecuador in the future as with increasing numbers of Venezuelans fleeing the country hostile views towards them are increasing.

I would like to set up a home with him to explore living together and see what the future brings but I don't know where we can go. I don't think he is able to get a visitor visa to the UK as, even if I sponsor him, the Home Office would judge him to be at high risk of overstaying. He is able to travel to Spain visa free but lacks a passport to do so (Venezuela's authorities don't seem to be issuing them anymore) but with Brexit I will struggle to move to Spain either as a UK passport holder. I can visit Ecuador myself but I will also not be able to work without a visa and I do not have the savings to live for 2 years out there and it is not permitted to spend more than 90 days per year visa free. There would also be no guarantee that he would still be there by the time I had a visa. Finally losing my UK job would prevent me from having the earnings to sponsor him on a spousal visa.

I am at a loss of what steps I should try.

Thanks

Unless you enter into a civil partnership and apply for a spouse visa, there isn't really a route for him based on your relationship.
