British Naturalisation - Proof of English

Post by redb51 » Wed Oct 11, 2017 3:02 pm

Hi all,

I need a bit of assistance, as I find quite confusing the gov.uk website information about "English for citizenship and settling".

Background:

EEA Citizen
Arrival in the UK: 1997
Permanent residence permit card: 2001
Cambridge First Certificate in English: Level B2 - pass - 1997

I am thinking of applying for British citizenship; however by browsing the gov.uk website it seems that I will have to take an IELTS B1 test to prove my level of English language.

Can I still use my Cambridge FCE Level B2 (never expires) as proof of my knowledge of English? I tried to contact the nationality enquires but they never reply.

From gov.uk website

"Applying for citizenship

You can use a B1 level qualification that’s run out if you’re applying for citizenship and it was accepted when you settled in the UK.

It doesn’t matter if the B1 level test you took isn’t on the current list of recognised tests. You don’t need to take another test."

The problem is that I had never had to prove anything when settling in the UK as EEA citizen.

I would appreciate comments/advice.

Regards

No you cannot.

You will need to do another test from one of the HO approved test providers if you do not have a UK degree.

Thanks CR001

The Cambridge FCE is B2 which is higher than B1. Do I still need to take an exam?

I suppose my EEA wife does not need to as she did a MsC in the UK.

Thanks again

Cambridge FCE does not appear on HO's approved list here (click). If it is not on this list, then you have to take a new test.
