Applying for naturalisation with maiden name

Post by ir0005 » Wed Jan 03, 2018 6:40 pm

Hello,

I am planning to apply for naturalisation to become a British citizen. I recently got married in the UK but have not yet changed my name on any legal documents after marriage. I am planning to take my husband's name in the future, however it is a priority for me to get naturalised as soon as possible.

Therefore, I plan to go through the following route:

1. apply for naturalisation using my maiden name (considering all my documents are currently in my maiden name)
2. obtaining the British passport
3. change my name in my Romanian passport
4. request a name change in my British passport

I know that the AN guidance states that:
"1.7 (...)The name that you give in sections 1.5 and 1.6 must be the same name that is on your current passport, travel document or Biometric Residence Permit. We will not normally issue a certificate of registration or naturalisation in the name that is different from a person’s official documents. Names that do not match your current passport or other identity documents may result in Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) refusing to issue you with a British passport if you hold another passport containing a different name.
If you have married or entered a civil partnership and changed your name, and you wish to be registered in that name, you must change your name on your other passport, travel documents and national identity card, to reflect that name, before sending us your application. This is to avoid a person having official documents in more than one identity.
"

However, I have not yet changed my name and having read the guidelines for changing your name on the British passport, it doesn't specify a time limit of changing your name after marriage.

Alternatively, I can change my name and then apply for naturalisation with my married name.

Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

You can change your name and reapply for a British passport at any point. There is also no legal requirement to change your name if you get married, it is a personal choice.

Your choice, but you would need to change your Romanian passport first.
