HI,
My father in Law is Nepalese and holds an Indefinite leave to Remain but resides in Nepal. He is visiting me in uk in March and we would like to go to France whilst he’s here. Does he need to get a visa to travel before or?

ILR is for the UK only. It is not applicable to EU countries. He would need to apply for a Schengen visa.

I’m not entirely sure how long he’s held it for but fought as a Ghurka. He visits uk every couple of years in order to keep ILR. What is a Schengen Visa?

Short visits do not maintain ILR status. ILR is only 'indefinite' if residing and settled in the UK. It is lost if you leave the UK for 2 years or more.

What is a Schengen Visa?

A visa for one of the EU countries that is part of the Schengen visa scheme. It is a visitor visa.
