I hope I’m posting correctly, and in the right place too.
I am an American citizen and I married a British citizen. We met at our local university. He’s currently here on a student visa that will run out in May. We’ve been living together for a year and married since October. We recently decided that together we should go to England after his visa runs out. We had a Skype interview with a solicitor who basically told us to forget it.
We can prove we’re a legitimate couple, but don’t meet the financial requirements. I’m a recent college grad that manages a small business. I make about $16,000 a year, but don’t have much savings(doing my best to land another job!). My husband has an assured job back home with his uncles company once he graduates. But has not been permitted to work since he’s been in America(with the exception of one summer groundskeepimg job through the university, his w2 this year was for about $2000). The system doesn’t seem to be too kind to a couple just starting out. The solicitor said we need to come up with an amount equal to 50,000 pounds and keep that amount for six months (his combined income with my savings)!! It seems impossible to say the least.
We’d be staying with his family when we got over there, and have all the help and support in the world! His family is by no means made of money, but middle class in Surrey is nothing to sneeze at. We’d certainly have the support and connections to help us land on our feet and build a life for ourselves.
It seems like there’s nothing we can do, and that we’re going to be separated regardless of being legally married. I don’t have any relatives, so my husband is truly my only family. What can we possibly do? I don’t want to be left behind.
I’d appreciate any advice, I’m really just desperately sad right now.
