Need help with information about spouse visa from the USA

This is my first time posting here and hoping I'm in the correct category (if not, I'd appreciate knowing where to post).

I'm seeking advice about obtaining a spouse visa for my husband who is American. We understand we need to apply for the visa when we are next in the US and wanted to find out if anyone on this forum can give an idea of how long it's presently taking to obtain? We're heading over there next month for about four weeks and reluctant to surrender his passport unless he's assured it will be returned before we depart.
