Latest time to apply for extension - UK Tier 2

Dear all,

I have understood from the previous topics/messages that you can apply for an extension (same employer-same conditions) anytime before your visa will expire. In the Tier 2 Policy Guidance says you can continue working while they are considering the extension application if is subtimetted BEFORE previous leave expired. I cannot find WHEN is the latest time you can apply for the extension.
For instance, my Visa will expire 08th July 2018, can I apply for an extension on the 2nd of July?
I would be really gratefuly if someone can clarify that for me!
