Process for applying British Citizenship for a child born abroad

Post by sillyquestion » Mon Jun 25, 2018 9:06 am

Hello everyone!

I have a query about how to register my new born son as British Citizen. Here are the detail:
1. I am a British Citizen by naturalisation (became British Citizen in 2014)
2. My wife is Indian citizen
3. Child was born abroad in 2018
4. Child is currently situated in India

What is the process for applying my new born son's British Citizenship and getting his British passport?
Can I make the citizenship and passport application in India?
What is the approximate timeframe for getting my new born son's British Passport?

Apologies, if this has been discussed in other forums posts but I couldn't find a post that laid down the exact process for the above circumstances. If there is already a post that gives this info, kindly share the link.

Otherwise any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks everyone! :)

Apply for a passport directly. It can take 6 to 12 months from India.

Alternatively apply for Indian passport and RoA.

Thank you so much for your response :)

In terms of the process, should I be filing in this form: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... ation-form

Also, with regards to supporting documents, there is a clear list here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... _10.16.pdf

But I am little confused in terms what type of passport category my new born son falls into? There are 8 categories. Any ideas mate?

Hi, After reviewing various threads on this forum, I have decided to apply for Indian passport first and apply for ROA-COE. Later on will apply for British PP.

For ROA-COE application, I have one doubt.

My wife's name on the marriage certificate and her passport is her maiden name and therefore, it doesn't exactly match mother's name on the birth certificate of the child.

So, the questions are:

1. Am I required to submit my wife's passport for the application (father is british and mother is Indian and application is on the basis of father's citizenship?)

2. Wife's maiden name on the marriage certificate is going to be a problem? If yes, what should be done.

Thanks for your help.
