Dual citizenship and discretion (Polish/English)

Post by jakubd » Thu Jun 28, 2018 4:41 am

I've been doing some research into getting a dual citizenship and hit a bit of a wall, wondering if anyone has any information of can point to somewhere where I can get it.

My situation:

I'm 25, originally from Poland and have lived, attended school and worked in the UK since I was 7. I've always considered a British passport but never actually got around to it. Currently I've quit my job and I'm travelling in Southeast Asia with my girlfriend, we plan on returning to the UK within the next 7-12 months but not before then. While away I decided to take a closer look at the application process for a dual citizenship for UK/Poland and although I satisfy all the requirements there is one where I'm uncertain of. That being the "spent no more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months". It's quite clear what this is asking, but will I really need to spend another 5 years in the UK even thought I've basically lived my entire life there?

After a little digging I've found posts of people applying for "discretion" regarding that clause, when they've spend longer than 100 days away. I've tried to look for any official website describing the process but I've come up empty. I'm worried that the amount of time I'm going to be away for would be too long (considering it'd be closer to 365 days).

Is there somewhere I can find any further information or maybe an email address I can send questions to regarding what I've spoken about above.

TL;DR - 25, Polish, Live in UK for 18+ years, want to apply for dual citizenship, currently travelling will be away for ~365 days, does that refresh the time stayed in the UK and would I need to wait 5 years from when I return to apply for citizenship?

Thank you!

You should review the guidance and form for naturalisation:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... en-form-an
There is no application for dual citizenship, you would apply for British citizenship.

You may find that you satisfy the presence requirements 280 days after return to the UK.
