Naturalisation after Surinder Singh PR

Post by chinchilla1000 » Wed Jul 25, 2018 3:10 pm

Hi folks,

First time posting on this forum, I hope I've come to the right place!
I've just received my PR after 5 years in the UK, having entered via the Surinder Singh route in Mar '13, and would like to swiftly proceed to citizenship.

The confirmation letter I received regarding my PR states that spouses of British citizens (such as myself), can apply for citizenship immediately upon receipt of the BRP, provided they meet the 'relevant criteria'.
Does this mean that I don't need to have had immigration clearance for 12 months before applying? (NB. For some reason the BRP has a validity of only 10 years :? )

I'm also a bit confused about this new 'settlement' requirement after Brexit - given that I entered under Surinder Singh, I'm not sure if I would have to apply for this before applying for citizenship :? (I'm trying to convince my husband it has no bearing on our situation, but happy to be proven wrong! 8) )

Is anyone kindly able to shed any light?

Many thanks in advance!

Correct yes. If you are married to a British citizen, you don't need to wait but you must meet the Spouse of BC 3 year residence requirement to apply, including being physically present at the start of the 3 year residence period.

No issue if you apply for British Citizenship.
