British Citizenship for Minor

Post by rely1458 » Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:17 pm

Not my case specifically, but about friends.

They are EEA Citizens and have a daughter who is 15 this year. Born in a EU country (not the UK) and has lived in the UK with the parents for over 8 years now. Can the daughter apply for British citizenship on her own before she becomes 18? Due to the cost, they currently don't have enough savings to apply together, so if the daughter could apply on her own, it would be ideal for them. Both parents and the daughter are EU citizens and have permanent residency (PR Card).

From my gathering, this is not possible, but I hear people saying the opposite. Any thoughts?

Children born abroad only qualify when either parent applies at the same time or one parent is already British.

It is only children born in the UK that can apply separately without a parent applying.

Thanks for confirming CR001, that is what I could gather as well. I guess their only option is for one of the parents to apply so the daughter can be registered as British citizen too, or simply wait until she turns 18 and applies on her own.

In the latter case, even though she has studied in the UK for primary / secondary schools, she would still be required to pass the relevant English language test and Life in the UK, correct?

Yes, if she applies when she is 18, she will need LIUK and English B1 tests as they are mandatory. Being schooled here unfortunately is not enough.

Parents to not always have to be applying. I agree with CR001 that this is what the policy says.
