Referee and Identification questions

Post by Cmgoehle » Thu Nov 08, 2018 1:59 am

Hi
I was born before 1983 - my mom was a british citizen here married my dad who is US citizen. Everything I read indicates that siblings and I would qualify for British Citizenship by descent. I have several questions:
1. Would my cousins husband be considered a relative - as I have asked him to be a referee on the application

2. Do I have to live or be living in the UK to apply for citizenship by descent.

3. Will ai have to go to England to submit my biometrics and for the citizenship ceremony (if approved)

4. I started an online application but it seems I have to use a british address? Does this mean that I can't apply for my citizenship online?

5, When I submit my Identification - can I use my expired US Passport or do they require my current passport?

Thanks
Coleen HG

1. A referee cannot be someone related to you by blood or through marriage. So I guess that would be a no.

2. No you do not have to be in the UK.

3. No.

4. Are you using form UKM??

5. I believe it should be current.

The referee is my cousins husband - he’s not a blood relative and I’m not married to him, it’s my second cousin. If I have them list themselves as a friend, is that ok?
I’m using UKM

Sorry I’m not an expert in this area but definitely your second cousin’s husband is not blood relative to you. 🤔

Not related by blood but by marriage. Does not change the fact that the individuals are family related
