Applying for ILR

Hi there,
Hoping for some help! I am due to apply for my ILR. My dates:
I first entered the UK on the 1/8/2017 on a Spouse LTR visa
First BRP exp17/4/2020
Second BRP exp 8/10/2022
I realise that I can already apply for my ILR, however I need to travel back to Australia as my father just passed away. His funeral is not until the 23rd September and I would then return to the UK toward the end of September. My question is this. If I wait until I return to apply, as long as my application is submitted before the 8/10/22 is that ok? Do I need to have had my biometric appointment before this date too?
Or would I be better trying to submit my application asap and apply for an express biometric appointment so it is done before I go to Australia?

Apply when you return. You must apply online and pay before your visa expiry date. Biometric can be later
