Visiting UK with 2 months passport validity

Post by Alan34 » Sat Aug 24, 2024 10:50 am

Hi all

My inlaws planning to travel to UK on visit visa from September 4th to November 14th 2024.
But their passport expiring on November 16th 2024. But they have UK visit visa until June 2025.
Now can they travel to UK and leave before passport expiration
Or does immigration stop them as they doesn't have 6month passport validity?
Please advise

Thanks in advance

You’re from outside the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
You must have a valid passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay.

Hi Thanks for your reply
Inlaws are holding Indian passport and traveling from India. Passport is valid during their stay and leaving UK 2 days before the passport expiration.
Main concern is would they be stopped at immigration just for a reason that they are not having 6 months passport validity.
They also had return ticket booked

The six months validity relates to British passports.

You may want to check with Indian emigration whether they impose any minimum passport validity requirements for leaving India. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs recommends that your passport should have at least six months validity from your planned date of return to India.

And if their passports expire in the UK, apparently their passports may not be renewed by the Indian High Commission in the UK (which only provides the service to Indians resident in the UK - see scroll bar at the top of the page in the link above).

Also, airlines may impose minimum requirements as they will be left transporting the passengers free-of-cost back to India if there is an immigration rejection at the border in the UK. So check with the airline in question too.

Well spotted, @secret.simon. The Indian Consulate in NYC also states:
Q: I am Indian Passport holder and my passport has less then 6 months validity, Can I travel with this passport ?

A. For any international travel Passport Must by valid for minimum 6 months, so you can not travel on this passport.

So in case if they renew passport before travel, how to deal with existing UK visit visa as the stamp will be on old passport

They simply need to carry both passports - the new and the one with the visa sticker.

I also support the idea of having a new passport instead of travelling with one with less than 3/6 months validity.

Thanks all for your inputs
Means a lot
We cancelled flight tickets and planning for passport renewal
So as there is no need to contact UK embassy for stamping on new passport, it relieves a bit stress

Thanks again
