Dual national travel - citizenship application approved but travelling before ceremony

Post by William the Conker » Tue Mar 24, 2026 9:39 am

Hello,

I applied for UK citizenship in November and just received the email saying my application has been approved yesterday.

I hold Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport.

I am travelling to Canada on 2 April and returning the the UK on 10 April.

I am concerned about the new passport rules affecting dual nationals. Can I still enter the UK with my Canadian passport and existing e-Visa?

I am assuming that I am not a UK citizen until I have attended my citizenship ceremony, received my citizenship certificate, and returned by BRP.

Many thanks for your help.

You are only British once you have attended the ceremony, not from the approval letter date.

Thank you, Casa.

For my peace of mind, could you confirm that this means I can travel and re-enter the UK on my existing eVisa and Canadian passport?

You can travel between decision letter and citizenship ceremony, there is nothing stopping you from doing that.

I did it with no issues. Many have done that without problems.
