worth seeking a job in the uk for a gay professional ?

Post by snake1.plissken2 » Mon Apr 25, 2011 8:55 am

Hello,
I'm seriously considering a move to the UK because of the better climate for gay men (civil partnership being very important). Now, before doing something reckless I would like some honest opinions about how are openly gay people treated at work and during job interviews.
If possible I'd like that non-gay people share their views on working with a gay colleague.
I am aware that in this economic climate I would probably get a worse job than I have now. But if asked, during a job interview, why do I wish to change my current job and country of residence should I just say "personal reasons" or lay out the truth. How many negative points does one get for saying he's gay during a job interview.
Thanks

I'm not gay, I work with a few openly gay people and one or two I suspect probably are.

Doesn't bother me. Hasn't affected their promotion prospects at all.

I know one or two people in the office are more on their guard - but they tend to be the older people.

The UK is considered one of the best places for Gay people to work and integrate in the community. Its all very open and accepted with no second thought given. There are so many celebs and TV show presenters who are gay and there is no obvious mention of it (unlike in most other parts of the world)
I have personally worked with quite a few gay people and to be honest, neither I nor all my other colleagues had an issue or even discussed their sexuality behind their backs - its just a very common and normal thing here and it should be so everywhere else.

So trust me, UK is a great place to be generally and in this case for you as you will never feel like you are sticking out on your own. Let me repeat, when it comes to having friends or professional careers, no one gives a second thought about one's sexual preferences, they are just looking at you as a person :-)

Cheers

To start with I'm not gay, but I have no problem with Gay people nor much of the people living in the UK as well.

It is quite common here and you will not be treated anything differently, rather you would become a part of where ever you work, UK is open to everyone and is quite a friendly place.
