The change in the naturalisation law in April 2016

Post by Envy777 » Mon Jan 04, 2016 3:22 pm

We are British residents (we have indefinite leave in UK) for 3 years already and we are applying for British citizenship within 3-4 months. We have passed the English and Life in the UK tests already.

The question is: will this new law affect us? We do not make £35,000 a year.

The £35,000 rules is for Tier 2 General Migrants and NOT for migrants already on ILR or British.

How long have you been resident in the UK? 3 years...or you've held ILR for 3 years? :?

Please don't send me PMs asking for immigration advice on posts that are on the open forum. If I haven't responded there, it's because I don't have the answer. I'm a moderator, not a legal professional.

Are you waiting for the fee increases that are likely to occur each April?

Yeah I wonder if that isn't a small part of the motivation behind these price increases. To 'encourage' longtimers on ILR to go on and get citizenship. My wife and I waited four year between ILR and getting citizenship and really had no intention of doing it ever, until our second child with born with automatic citizenship, which changed our priorities a bit. If the prices had been skyrocketing in those years as they are now, I think we might have had to not only consider it, but probably be proactive about it. Any delay now is very costly, even for those who can afford it.

I think fees will keep on rising. There is inelastic demand. No one who wants to become a citizen will be put off by the fees even if they keep on rising.

Once the UKBA becomes profitable it will be privatised just like the Land Registry.

To avoid this topic becoming a long, rambling 'complaint against HO fees' type topic, it will now be locked as has completely gone astray from what the original question was, which was NOT fee related.
