they sent all your documents back only because you didn't send your passport. It's clearly stated on HO website that in case there is lack of any document they send everything back straight away. I bet they even didn't read you explanation letter. So that's the thing!!

I received exactly the same letter from them, and that was it. They never got back to me. I infomed them of my divorce by a letter, so I presume, they want me to apply when my RC expires, maybe in you case they will do the same.

I think that's not gonna work, you would need at least your ex's bank statements for that particular period of time with enough money to show he was financially independant. Plus thay always ask for private medical insurance. No point to apply, they will reject.
