Made redundant just two months before visa expiry

Post by jaango123 » Wed Jul 22, 2026 2:02 pm

Hi,

My current visa sponsored by employer is valid till September 24 2026 and my last date with the company is September 5. This was informed to me yesterday just 2 months before and has made my situation worse with a dependent spouse and school kids.

1. Does this mean I have only till September 5 legally in UK? Wont the company/home office give me 2 months time after the Visa expiry?
2. I have a meeting tomorrow with employer solicitor and can i raise the concern as I am completely confused what to do with my family in short span of time?
3. In worst case can I submit FLR visa by September 24th 2026? Is this a valid case for me?

1. You have until your visa expiry date.

2. You dont get additional time past your visa expiry date. The 60 days curtailment applies to those whose visas are valid for longer than 2 or 3 months.

3. What FLR do you belive you qualify for? How long have you been in the UK?

You either need to find another aponsor, a visa route you qualify for or you need to leave the UK by the date of bisa expiry.

I have been in UK for 4 years 6 months on Skilled visa route. I have kids going to school and working spouse dependent on me. Not sure what FLR will apply for me even if it does. It is challenging to leave and pack up in just 2 months with kids

To put CR001's answer in another way, if your underlying job comes to an end, a visa longer than 60 days is curtailed down to 60 days. A visa shorter than 60 days is allowed to lapse naturally.

So you get either 60 days or the remaining days on your visa, whichever is shorter.

Can your spouse qualify for a Skilled Worker visa in their own right?

Yes.

If the new sponsor application is rejected before the end of your existing visa, your current visa still remains valid till its last day.

If the new application is made before the expiry of your existing visa and it is not decided before your current visa has expired, your current visa is automatically extended (Section 3c Leave) until a decision is taken.

It is the school summer holidays now. I would suggest that now would be a good time to send the children to stay with grandparents/relatives in your/your spouse's country of habitual residence. That would give you maximum flexibility if you had to leave quickly.

Is biometrics through UKCAS appointment to be done to switch visa

Post by jaango123 » Sat Aug 08, 2026 11:43 am

Hi All,

I already had posted my situation
I am made redundant before 5 months of ILR application

LWD in current company - Sep 5(on notice period now of 1 month)
Last Visa validity - Sep 24

I somehow managed to get an offer after 3 rounds interview(offer confirmed over email)

However The offer letter through docsign/pdf is yet pending. I guess the COS will come after that then visa application and they want me to join in London not later than september 7.

My question is, is it mandatory for me to have UKCAS appointment for biometric or can i use the UK Id check app? If it is through app it can save a lot of time for me given my short time till visa expiry. I understand that the ukcas appointment may not be easy to get and book as well.

The employer is also worried on the timeline on visa validity end date

Switch vs Update visa as I am changing employer

Post by jaango123 » Wed Aug 19, 2026 8:16 pm

Hi All,

as per the site - https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa

I need to select "Update your visa if you change job or employer" as I am going to start a new job with a new sponsor who have given me cos? Is this what i need to select? Note that I am already on skilled worker visa now and as I am made redundant there i found a new sponsor job with them

However there is also a switch visa - "Apply to switch to a Skilled Worker visa"

Both the terms sound confusing
