To put CR001's answer in another way, if your underlying job comes to an end, a visa longer than 60 days is curtailed down to 60 days. A visa shorter than 60 days is allowed to lapse naturally.

It is the school summer holidays now. I would suggest that now would be a good time to send the children to stay with grandparents/relatives in your/your spouse's country of habitual residence. That would give you maximum flexibility if you had to leave quickly.
