Ancestry Visa -- Different spelling of last name

Post by xileh » Wed Jul 16, 2014 2:26 am

Hello,

I'm interested in an ancestry visa through my mothers' side of the family (my grandfather was born in Scotland).

I received a copy of his entry in the register of births, however his name is not spelled the same as how it was spelled for the remainder of his life after immigrating to Canada.

On his birth certificate, his last name is spelled McDonald... However, on my mother's birth certificate, his last name is spelled MacDonald. How much of an issue will this cause me for applying for an ancestry visa, and is there anything I can do to make the process easier for myself and those reviewing my application?

You can explain by saying it is the same person with a slightly different spelt name.

My Ancestry was approved through my grandmothers side and her UK birth certificate was spelt Molly with no second name but all her other official documents were Mollie Doreen.

Thanks for the information -- What other documents of hers did you have to submit beyond the birth certificate?

I ask because my grandfather is deceased, and I don't know if I could get my hands on any other official documents of his at this point.

You don't need the death certificate.

You will need the following original documents :

Grandparent : unabridged birth certificate and marriage certificate. Copy of passport would be good but if you don't have it, it is fine.

Parent : unabridged birth certificate, clearly showing/naming the grandparent through who you are claiming. Marriage certificate

Yourself : unabridged birth certificate, clearly showing/naming the parent through who you are claiming. You marriage certificate if relevant.

You will also need to provide evidence that you are/have been seeking employment in the UK, a copy of your CV and qualifications, proof of funds and that funds have been maintained for 3/6 months, proof of accommodation in the UK or letter of invitation etc. and of course your passport.
