Although it should at least be valid at the date of application, but ideally it should be renewed for guaranteed biometrics appointment as UKVCAS don't accept an expired passport.

You need a valid passport. It is yout official form of your identity and nationality and it also needs be valid if you need to travel and for any ukvi applications you make.

No you won't, but as an immigrant, it is important to have a valid passport.

You need one for any application you make to ukvi and for ilr and citizenship, you have to prove your absence with all pages if your passport. If there are gaps, it could potentially be difficult to prove your residency/absence.
