Urgent question about entering UK as US/UK citizen without UK passport

Post by Dpwad8 » Tue Nov 24, 2020 7:57 pm

Hello, I have a question I’m wondering if anyone can help me answer. I am a US citizen who lives and works in the UK for the past 8 years and recently received my UK citizenship, and I have attended the ceremony and have a certificate of citizenship. However, due to COVID I have not been able to apply for a UK passport. And since I now have UK citizenship, I no longer have/need a valid BRP residence card. I will be travelling back to the UK on my US passport, so does anyone know what documentation I will need to show at border control upon arrival? Will my US passport and citizenship certificate be enough?

From UK side, upon looking on your Citizenship certificate & passport you will definitely be let in.

But there may be delays at the airport while that is verified, so factor that delay in. The naturalisation certificate is not meant to be used for travel purposes.

I would suggest applying for a British passport or a CoE-RoA as soon as possible.

Applying British passport should indeed be the top priority before travelling but what I am trying to gauge is that if obtaining it is remarkably cumbersome then what could hinder a US national (visa free national) to enter the UK.

Use the e-gates to enter, no issue.

Thank you, everyone for your feedback. As there isn’t enough time to get a passport before travelling, I was feeling very concerned. But this has put my mind at ease.
