Uk resident 47 years

Post by Corey76 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 11:24 pm

Hi...
Thanks in advance for any help...

Just wondered what my best option, routes and cheapest option are to get a British passport and citizenship?

I've lived in the UK since 1971, nearly all my life. I've current Australian citizenship with indefinite leave to remain. Married to BC and 2 kids born here. Is there a best route to gain citizenship, Ideally without paying thousands of pounds and taking knowledge tests....

Just trying to understand my simplest and most cost effective process to follow as it seems very complex. ..

Thanks for any advice
Corey

Unfortunately, KoLL is a compulsory requirement for naturalisation, unless you are exempted.

There may be other paths.

Do tell us more about your parents' circumstances.
If you are female, then when did you marry your British citizen husband?

It will be interesting to know how old OP is aswell. OP has lived in this country for 48 years. It may be a reasonable inference that he may well be over 65 and hence may be exempted.

Moreover, the Immigration rules exempted ILR applicants who have spent over 15 years in the UK under specific leave. I'm unsure if a correlated exemption applies for naturalisation?

No. I was a resident for 23 years when I applied for my naturalisation (with ILR), I had to jump through the hoops like everyone else.

There is no way of avoiding making the effort to understand the process and it will take you a while. If you want to save money, you have to understand your own circumstances and it is each individual's responsibility to sort out their own immigration status.

You won't have to take an English test because you come from an English majority speaking country but you will have to take 'life in the uk' and you will have to prove what you have been up to over the past 5 years including residency (shouldn't be difficult with an Australian passport as it gets stamped when you travel) and good character requirement.

They will also want to see evidence of your Indefinite Leave to Remain, I presume you have passport stamps so again that shouldn't be a problem.

I believe that the 15-year exceptions for ILR applications came into force on 1 October 2013.
